Seoirse returns here to his musical beginnings to cook up an eclectic taste of the wide ranging and abundant offerings in his forthcoming boxed set – “Another Side of Seoirse”. The songs are linked in their diversity by their beauty and their place among Seoirse’s musical roots.
Known in and around Donegal as a singer of Gaelic songs and as the front man of acoustic bands including Donegal Folk-Weave and Dúlamán, Seoirse here adds to his string of six studio albums a solo collection of internationally sourced songs – many captured in just one take and all performed without overdubbing or effects – rendered simply through the pure acoustic essentials of voice and nylon-stringed guitar.
Seoirse confidently explores the essence of songs that shaped his lifelong musical development from the 1950s to the present. In his unique and rich reworking of these songs we are transported across time and borders by the magic of both memory and his fluid style which seamlessly and coherently interweaves classical, Gaelic and American folk elements. In Seoirse’s skilled hands these favorite and familiar songs resonate with a fresh and tender intimacy, with the delicate yet vibrant presence of a live concert or a private performance by a warm hearth. “And here on his … beautifully produced “Seoirse, voice & guitar”… he steers us through his back pages, putting the song and the story behind the song into its rightful place at the centre of all good music-making and performance…
One of Seoirse’s gifts, always, as a music arranger, is his ability to sift out older versions of songs and invigorate them with new vitality in delivery…
His story-telling voice inhabits each song and bewitches the listener into attention…
One gets the impression that one is present in the room in which he is singing and that the performance is solely for the listener alone…
“I Shall Be Released” echoes the folk-singing style of the 1960s and it’s so refreshing to hear these songs sung in this format of lone guitar-player and singer…
His chord progressions always excite and surprise… “Seems So Long Ago” has poignancy in its performance that Leonard Cohen himself would be proud of… “Hallelujah”, which retains its hymn-like and devotional quality in Seoirse’s singing, is one of the rare respectful performances of this song that you’re ever likely to hear. We the listeners could be present in a coffee-house gig in Greenwich Village; such is the intimacy with which Seoirse imbues these performances…
More than anything, else what emerges in this boxed set of Seoirse’s is the intimacy and sincerity of performance which is enshrined therein. Thankfully, a whole new audience will experience these songs and tunes and find itself emotionally enriched and renewed by Seoirse’s voice and guitar.
Buíochas le Dia go bhfuil amhránaithe agus ceoltóirí inár measc go fóill a bhfuil sé de mhisneach acu na hamhráin agus an ceol a nascadh i ndóigheannaí chruthaitheacha. Tá muid uilig go mór faoi chomaoin acu. Gura fada buan do chuid chantain, a Sheoirse an cheoil bhinn.”
